Regenerate the thumbnails for one or more of your image uploads. Useful when changing their sizes or your theme.

The Regenerate Thumbnails plugin empowers you to regenerate all thumbnail sizes for one or more images within your Media Library. This proves beneficial in various scenarios, such as incorporating a new thumbnail size, adjusting the dimensions of an existing thumbnail, or transitioning to a new WordPress theme with different featured image dimensions. Additionally, it offers the convenience of deleting outdated, unused thumbnails to optimize server space.

  • WP-CLI: For users with command line access to their server, WP-CLI is recommended as an alternative. It offers faster regeneration without HTTP requests overhead and can be run efficiently for sites with numerous thumbnails.
  • Jetpack’s Photon Module: Developed by Automattic, Jetpack provides functionality to self-hosted WordPress sites. The Photon module serves images from’s global content delivery network (CDN), enhancing image loading speed. It generates thumbnails dynamically, eliminating the need for this plugin. While the plugin author works for Automattic, Photon is recommended even without that affiliation.
