Regenerate Thumbnails

Regenerate the thumbnails for one or more of your image uploads. Useful when changing their sizes or your theme.

The Regenerate Thumbnails plugin empowers you to regenerate all thumbnail sizes for one or more images within your Media Library. This proves beneficial in various scenarios, such as incorporating a new thumbnail size, adjusting the dimensions of an existing thumbnail, or transitioning to a new WordPress theme with different featured image dimensions. Additionally, it offers the convenience of deleting outdated, unused thumbnails to optimize server space.

Key Features:

  • Regenerate thumbnail sizes for past uploads, accommodating new size additions or dimension changes.
  • Delete old, unused thumbnails to free up server space.

In Memory of Alex Mills: In memory of Alex Mills, the plugin’s original author, who passed away in February 2019. His contributions will be maintained by Automattic and the WordPress community. Users finding this plugin useful are encouraged to consider donating to the Oregon Health and Science University in his honor.

Alternatives:

  • WP-CLI: For users with command line access to their server, WP-CLI is recommended as an alternative. It offers faster regeneration without HTTP requests overhead and can be run efficiently for sites with numerous thumbnails.
  • Jetpack’s Photon Module: Developed by Automattic, Jetpack provides functionality to self-hosted WordPress sites. The Photon module serves images from WordPress.com’s global content delivery network (CDN), enhancing image loading speed. It generates thumbnails dynamically, eliminating the need for this plugin. While the plugin author works for Automattic, Photon is recommended even without that affiliation.
